Well Known Harpist to Hit High Note During Fleadh

Date released: Sunday, 19th July, 2009

Renounded harpist, Janet Harbison, is acknowledged as one of the most prominent traditional harpers and a pioneering personality in the Irish harp music scene.

And, she is set to play in Tullamore as part of Seachtain na hÉigse, which begins on Sunday, 16th August 2009 and marks the beginning of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2009.

The recital will take in the Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, 18th August 2009 between 7pm and 8pm and promises to be a great night’s entertainment.

Janet is often known as an authorative resource on the history and music of the Irish harp and ethnic music.

Her discovery and enthusiasm for much of the extinct ancient harp repertoire has led her into teaching and in fact reviving the music through the oral tradition.

She has been an influential teacher as well as a prolific composer, a talented performer, writer and producer.

She established the Harp Orchestras in order to provide her students with the opportunity to perform in public and to develop careers as professional harpers.

As a composer, she has set out to correct the imbalance of the lack of ‘new’ music written for the Irish harp and her arrangements are widely used and harpers worldwide often await her new publications with abated breath.

Janet has an astonishing number of accolades to her name and the forthcoming recital will be an opportunity to hear and experience the magic of her harp playing. The recital is free and is an event not to be missed.
