Fleadh Cheoil Tulach Mhór has set a whole new meaning to the Friday evening opening of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann with the World’s Largest Traditional Irish Music, Song and Dance World Record Attempt.
This year’s attempt will take place in Tullamore’s Market Square on Friday, 21st August at 8pm and will be preceded by the colourful opening parade.
This fantastic event has continued in success since the inaugural attempt at the 2007 Fleadh.
It is the innovative idea of the Fleadh’s Youth Officer, James Hogan and become one of the firm favourites of the Fleadh’s exciting programme.
The Fleadh Youth Officer said; “If people were to take away one memory from Tullamore it has to be the atmosphere and the crowds, which filled O’Connor Square, Tullamore, for the last two years’ attempt to break the world record attempt.
“We are really looking forward to the 2009 event. It’s promising to be even bigger and better then the last two years’ attempts. We want to get over 3,000 people playing, singing and dancing for over 56 minutes this year and we want your help.”
The following is the records that are set and broke so far;
Year 1 -- 2700 people for 45 Minutes Solid
Year 2 : 2852 people participating for 56 minutes solid
Continuing, James enthused that Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann Tulach Mhór has set and broken the world's largest session record for the past two years. “We are poised to do it again in 2009. It's hoped that it will be third time lucky for the organisers and that we can make over 3,000 people perform for more then 56 minutes.
“This is why we need every musician, singer, and dancer to come along to Market Square on Friday, 21st August to help break and set a new world record and to be part of this exciting ground breaking musical fete.
“We ask people to download the tunes and songs from the Fleadh's website and spread the list around to all the Comhaltas branches, music classes, music groups, families and musicians all over the world so that we can come along on Friday, 21st August 2009 for the 8pm start. This promises to be the best world record yet and don't miss the opportunity to play your part.
“Without your help, this event could not happen. So get learning those tunes/songs and we will see you at the World Record Attempt in Tullamore on Friday, 21st August at 8pm. We will have many special guests performing and participating in the event on the night.”
Organisers are encouraging people to come early to ensure that people get a place at this exciting event. Further details, visit www.fleadh2009.com
